How to Do a Home Inventory for Your Insurance Company | Your ...

If losing your personal property to fire, burglary, or some sort of natural disaster doesn?t sound stressful enough, imagine trying to go back in your memory bank to come up with a list of everything that?s missing or destroyed so that you can recoup some of your losses. If you have yet to do a home inventory for insurance purposes, don?t put it off any longer. There?s no better time than now to do a home inventory for your insurance company?and here?s how you can do it.

Get Familiar with Your Policy

Home Inventory app from State Farm InsuranceIf you?re not as familiar with your homeowner?s insurance policy as you probably should be, take it out and review it before you do your home inventory. Take notes regarding your level of coverage, and pay special attention to exclusions. After you do a home inventory, you might find that your existing coverage is less than adequate. If this is the case, you should seriously consider updating your policy so that you have enough coverage for the worst case scenario?a total loss. Doing a home inventory is a great way to find out if an updated policy is in order.

Do a Walk-Through

When you?re ready to start your inventory, set aside a sufficient block of time in which you won?t be interrupted and do a complete walk-through of your home. As you walk through each room of your home, take a video recorder or a camera with you to capture images of your valuables. At the very least, record or photograph the items that would be the most expensive to replace?items such as antiques, collectibles, large furnishings, jewelry, and electronic devices. In addition to walking through each room in your home, be sure to walk through the attic, basement, garage, and shed, if you have them.

Create an Itemized List

After you?ve done a thorough walk-through, sit down with your video recording or photographs and create an itemized list of your possessions. This can be done by hand, on your PC using a word-processing program, or by using a home inventory program provided by your insurance company. Along with a detailed description of each item, enter in either its value or how much you paid for it, the approximate date you acquired the item, and where you purchased it (if applicable).

Make Copies

A detailed home inventory will be of no use to you if it?s lost or destroyed along with the possessions it lists?so don?t neglect to make back-up copies of your itemized list and all recordings or photographs that go along with it. Safe places to keep back-up copies include a safe, a safety deposit box at your bank, or in the hands of someone close to you that you can trust. You may even want to ask your insurance representative to keep a copy of your home inventory in your file.

Update Your Home Inventory Regularly

Due to the fact that possessions in your home will come and go, update your home inventory on a regular basis?preferably once each year. By regularly updating your inventory, you?ll be able to provide accurate information to your insurance company in the event that you should need to file a claim?and you?ll be able to make smarter decisions when it comes to updating your home insurance needs.

Everyone should have a home inventory safely stowed away for a rainy day?it?s the only way you?ll be able to insure proper compensation if your treasured belongings need to be replaced. Hopefully you?ll never need to refer to your home inventory?but if disaster should strike, the fact that you were prepared will undoubtedly provide you with some much-needed relief.

Four Border Collies and Me: JUST plain FUN

I love teaming up with my dogs.? I enjoy competition, but not nearly as much as just working with them.? Competition is too CONTROLLED for me.? I'd much rather be loading, unloading, moving stock, etc. on a ranch.? One thing that is a pet peeve with me is that dogs (for the most part) aren't allowed to defend themselves when challenged in USBCHA.? I don't? mean "cheap shots,"....I mean in self defense.? If stock drops a head at my dog on a ranch, I expect that dog to take a nip to show them who is in charge.? I don't like a "pansy" dog...never have.
Or, I'd much rather be out in the desert enjoying the "vastness," the "quiet" and just plain enjoying watching my dogs work.? Even 'just hiking' would take precedence over trialing.? So, I guess?I will never be a trial contender.? I don't trial enough to even be a finals contender.? But, that's okay.? I love rooting on my friends that get there.? I enjoy helping out when I can.? And, most of all I ENJOY my dogs.? Isn't that what it is all about?
I'm lucky that I have a ranch just 15 min. away from me with sheep, sometimes cows, and goats.? My dogs love it.? I love it.? It gives them the exercise they need and me, too. :0)? Now, if?I had a horse, I think life would be rather "complete."
Just a few pics from today working at Task Farms.?

Presidential debate: Romney and Obama bring it back home

The final presidential debate between Mitt Romney and President Obama underscored that their most important foreign policy differences have less to do with events on distant shores than priorities at home.

By Kurt Shillinger / October 23, 2012

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama during the third presidential debate at Lynn University, Oct. 22, in Boca Raton, Fla. Op-ed contributor Kurt Shillinger writes: It is possible 'to imagine what a truly robust foreign policy debate might have sounded like last night had either or both candidates set out specific bold agendas to address security, environmental, and economic questions as braided issues.'

Win McNamee/AP/Pool

The third and final presidential debate between Mitt Romney and President Obama was supposed to offer a vibrant exchange of views on America?s role and posture in the world. Instead it was notable both for agreement on key foreign conflicts and a constant drift back to domestic policy disputes.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

There are obvious political reasons for this. Undecided voters ? if there still are any ? are more likely to be influenced by plans to create jobs than strategies to stabilize Pakistan. The debate offered the candidates one last appeal to a national audience with the ballot just two weeks away.

But at a deeper level the debate underscored that the most important foreign policy differences between the two candidates have less to do with events on distant shores than priorities at home. How each would manage the economy would influence the priorities they project abroad.

The cold war, as President Obama reminded former Governor Mitt Romney last night, is over. In its place is a tangle of more complex conflict issues: transnational terrorism, rogue states, failed states, emerging democracies, and nonstate insurgencies.

Managing these challenges was the primary security focus during the first decade after 9/11. At the same time, however, the rise of China, India, and other densely populated emerging powers poses new challenges to US economic competitiveness.

Mr. Romney struggled to articulate a significantly different policy approach to the hard and soft security questions posed by Afghanistan, Iran?s suspected pursuit of nuclear weapons, Syria?s civil war, and the Arab Spring.

Take Iran, for example. Obama said that the administration?s efforts to impose stiff sanctions to force Tehran to abandon its nuclear program involved ?painstaking? and ?meticulous? efforts to ensure that ?all the countries participated, even countries like Russia and China....It?s because we got everybody to agree that Iran is seeing so much pressure.?

In response, Romney praised the tighter sanctions, but said he?d have done it sooner.

The Republican nominee also tried to lay unrest in the Middle East on Obama, blaming the president for failing to recognize Arab discontent before it erupted in the streets, and implying that he failed to stop the spread of Islamic extremism and allowed the Syrian government to kill 30,000 of its own people.

When asked how he would respond to those crises, however, he supported Obama?s use of drones against suspected Al Qaeda members and mostly repeated Obama?s insistence that supporting education and economic opportunities for young Arabs ? particularly women ? is essential to creating stability in the region.

Part of the challenge for Romney is that while Obama?s foreign policy has been at times inconsistent or even negligent ? particularly with regard to the Israel-Palestinian peace process ? the challenges of Iran, Syria, and Pakistan pose few easy alternatives.

Personal Injury Lawyers in Cleveland, Ohio | Social Media Dangers ...

Personal injury lawyers at Cleveland law firm, Mellino Robenalt, LLC, understand the many ways that an insurance company might attempt to undermine your personal injury claim. One of those techniques is by accessing your social media account, using your activity and the information you post against you.

Unfortunately, there are many social media dangers of which users may not be aware. One is sharing too much information online. This can be done in a variety of ways, from posting status updates and comments, to pictures and videos. Even the use of the ?like? button on certain pages can be damaging.

?Liking? a Page May Be Misconstrued

For instance, if you ?like? a page about your favorite band?s recent concert or a page about a race to support a cause you?re passionate about, you may not think much of it. However, some insurance companies may construe this to argue that you are physically active. Depending on your specific injuries, this may be very difficult to counter. If that?s the case, the insurance company may argue that your injuries are exaggerated in your claim.

Even if you did actually participate in these activities, it?s possible you did so in considerable discomfort. Perhaps you had tickets to the concert for months and attended in a wheelchair, or took other steps to still enjoy the show. Perhaps you went to the race event and cheered on your friends, but didn?t actually run or walk. And chances are, there are pictures to go along with these events that the insurance company may take and use out of context.

Don?t rely on common sense explanations to save you if the insurance company gets wind of your social media activity, pictures you post, and status updates you write. Make your account private, but still treat social media like it?s viewable by anybody, including insurance adjusters.

Seeking Help from a Lawyer?

A Study Travel Guide To Romes Ancient Wonders

As one of the mightiest seats of power in the ancient world, and a fascinating palimpsest of history, religion and culture across the eras, Rome is the ultimate study travel destination for those learning about ancient history and classical civilisations. Within the modern bustle of this endlessly fascinating, many-layered city, some of the most striking monuments of the ancient world can still be found and there is still much that can be learned from them. Visitors often talk about the palpable sense of history that can be felt in the streets, where a short stroll can bring you face-to-face with the bricks of ancient walls or pre-Christian stone carvings. Here are some of the most important sights for budding historians, classicists or archaeologists to see.

The Forum

When Tarquinius Priscus became the fifth king of Rome, at the end of the 7th century BCE, he committed himself to an extensive building programme, creating the hilltop Capitol temple complex and, below it, the Forum. This was an open piazza at the heart of the city both literally and metaphorically: it was where all of Romes roads met, and it was to be the citys most important public space, the venue for elections and assemblies, ceremonies, games and processions. Today, it is still one of the best places for study travel groups to gain an impression of the life of ancient Rome, by exploring the remains of the religious and public buildings that still stand there including the House of the Vestals, the Temple of Saturn, the Temple of Castor and Pollux, and the Arch of Titus. As well as a glimpse of the cultural and political life of the city, these ruins offer insight into Roman building techniques and artistic styles.

The Colosseum

Perhaps the most iconic structure of ancient Rome, the Colosseum is sure to feature on any study travel itinerary, and for good reason. Built in the first century CE, it is one of the crowning achievements of Roman engineering, and offers a sense of the awe that ancient visitors would have felt upon witnessing the theatrical productions, gladiatorial fights and battle re-enactments that were regularly held here.

Roman Streets and Shops

The ancient world, however, was not just composed of grand monuments: much more everyday structures had a vital role to play in the life of every great civilisation and, in Rome, some of these structures can still be seen. The remnants of ancient streets and shops show study travel groups a different side of Roman life, and one that was vital to the functioning of the Republic. They can be found in several places: Via Biberatica, in Trajans Market, is a wonderfully preserved cobbled street lined with shop buildings, while the Clivus Argentarius, behind the Forum Caesaris, is home to the grand ruins of more shops.

Debating Body Language: U.S. Presidential Candidate's Unspoken ...

Debating Body Language: U.S. Presidential Candidate?s Unspoken Messages

How important is body language to how you are perceived?

How about when you are debating national policy in front of millions of television viewers?

If you were ever in a tense negotiation or business situation, you know the importance of control over yourself so that no one can misinterpret your actions.

Program on Negotiation faculty member and Assistant Professor in the Negotiation, Organizations & Markets Unit at the Harvard Business School, Amy Cuddy, was a recent guest on CNN?s popular news show Anderson Cooper 360? to analyze the second of three presidential debates between current Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney from the perspective of the candidates? body language.

For example, at the debate?s onset Cuddy praises Obama?s warm, genuine smile and notes that challenger Romney is smiling with his mouth, but not his eyes, denoting anxiety.

In another instance where President Obama nods to acknowledge what candidate Romney is saying, Amy Cuddy says that this common social cue might be misinterpreted by television viewers as weakness, because the nodding may passively indicate agreement.

These seemingly small physical acts have a range of psychological impacts on the people viewing at home, indicating positions of relative strength or weakness through movement rather than words.

Professor Cuddy?s Research

Professor Cuddy?s work focuses on how we perceive and are influenced by others as well as the end-result of that influence by examining the roles of culture, emotions, nonverbal behaviors, and psychophysiological indicators.

She is particularly interested in various social categories, such as Asian-Americans, the elderly, or working mothers, and how they are judged by others and by their own social group.

Recent research investigates how nonverbal expressions of competence/power and warmth/connection change neuroendocrine levels, emotions, and the behaviors of the people performing these expressions, whether spontaneous or posed.

Best Buy offering preorders for Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X for $14999 and $9999 under contract

Nokia and HTC's upcoming Windows Phone 8 flagships are still on the standard release path: announcement, federal approval and now, pre-order. Keeping device availability tucked firmly under its hat, Best Buy is now offering Nokia's Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X for pre-sale, priced at $149.99 and $99.99, respectively. Early buyers have options, too: the Lumia 920 is kitted out in red, blue, yellow, black and white shells. Fashionistas with a flair for purple, however, will need to stick to HTC's hardware. Unfortunately, you don't get that much choice -- Best Buy's pre-orders don't balk at the devices' AT&T exclusivity. The retailer doesn't say when devices are going to ship, but we imagine early adopters won't have to wait too long.

Update: The Lumia 920 has disappeared from Best Buy's listings, while the 8X remains. This seems to suggest that pre-order stock for Nokia's new flagship has sold out, but given the short time it was available, let's hope that other issues are to blame and the absence is only temporary.

If You Are Remodeling Your Home, Or Building Your Dream House ...

If you are remodeling your home, or building your dream house from scratch (lucky you!), installing a brand new flooring might be on your checklist. There are numerous supplies to select from, each with various pros, disadvantages, and looks. If you are trying to live green (make environmentally pleasant remodeling options), you may want to consider an eco-friendly flooring material. There are quite a couple of options out there, so let?s take a look:

Cork Flooring

You?re familiar with the cork you discover stopping up wine bottles, of course, but you might never have walked on a cork flooring. It is the exact same material, just shaped into tiles or planks and stuck down on the sub-flooring. Because it is lightweight, set up is fairly painless.

Cork is regarded as eco-friendly simply because it?s harvested from sustainable resources. It comes from the bark of the cork oak tree (which can be collected without harming the tree itself).

Cork?s distinctive appear makes it a enjoyable flooring option, but there are practical reasons for selecting it as well. It acts as an insulator, absorbing audio and softening impacts (for instance, if you lay cork in the kitchen, a dropped dish most likely will not break). It is also an simpler materials to stand on for lengthy intervals than flooring made from ceramic tiles, stone, and so on.

Reclaimed Hardwood Flooring

If you love the appear of hardwoods (who doesn?t?) but cannot reconcile your self to getting trees reduce down just so you can get a new living space floor, there might still be a way for you to get the flooring of your dreams. Believe reclaimed wooden.

Reclaimed hardwood floors are made with timbers recycled from old constructions, this kind of as dilapidated barns, schoolhouses, libraries, etc. There are a quantity of businesses who buy the wood that would or else finish up in a junkyard and refinish it to create planks suitable for residential flooring. So essentially you can a new hardwood flooring with out any new trees becoming reduce down.

If you are wondering if these reused boards are structurally audio, they are. In reality, numerous people tout them as exceptional to the planks made from present day trees. The wooden used in these more mature structures came from outdated-development forests, from more mature initial generation trees on the other hand, present day hardwood floors are produced from wooden harvested from tree farms, exactly where the trees by no means truly reach maturity prior to being reduce down.

Have a floor produced from reclaimed wood and you?ll be getting high quality, character, and background in one swoop.

Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo is an additional flooring material that is catching on in recognition. It is considered eco-friendly because bamboo is a fast-expanding grass, rather than a tree, and farms can grow a shoot to maturity in just a couple of years.

Though bamboo is relatively comparable to hardwood flooring, it has a distinct appear, and some individuals prefer that uniqueness to hardwoods. It is a sturdy, sturdy material and will final just as lengthy as wooden. Although there aren?t as many types as there are species of wooden, different finishes can produce various looks for you to choose from.

The three flooring supplies we have discussedbamboo, hardwoods, and cork?are all regarded as eco-friendly. As an added reward, they are all relatively easy to maintain. No vacuum cleaner required right here! They are also good options for allergy victims. With bamboo, hardwoods, and cork, there is no location for pet dander, pollens, mold, mildew, mud, etc. to hide. Evaluate this to the nooks and crannies you get with carpets, and you will see why more and more individuals are selecting these other supplies.

? Rookie Mike Scott scored 17 points, Lou Williams and Ivan Johnson had 13 apiece and the Atlanta Hawks beat the depleted Dallas Mavericks 110-94 in a preseason game on Saturday night.

The Mavericks were without star forward Dirk Nowitzki and center Chris Kaman, who both stayed home to recover from injuries. Rookie Jae Crowder scored 15 for Dallas, and Vince Carter had 13.

Hawks center Al Horford didn't return for the second half after he was bothered by a sore right calf. He had four points and two rebounds in 14 minutes.

Nowitzki, an 11-time All-Star, could miss the next six weeks with a right knee injury. Kaman, who signed as a free agent in July, is out with a strained right calf muscle.

Michael Blackburn on the 'social mission' of universities.

THE PUBLICATION OF any report by the government should be greeted with a wailing and a gnashing of teeth since it usually portends the arrival of a new set of ideologically-driven, ill-thought-out, counter-productive, time-wasting and expensive recommendations. Such is the case with the recent offering ? University Challenge: How Higher Education Can Advance Social Mobility ? from Labour MP Alan Milburn, everybody?s favourite social mobility ?expert?.

As you can see immediately from the title, the report is produced by people who should themselves be confined to a multicoloured but well-fenced kindergarten where they are given no more responsibility than to draw stick men with crayons on bits of paper which are then chucked in the bin at the end of the day.

The report is over 90 pages in length, but to save you the tedium of reading it let me tell what it all means, because it?s quite simple.

  • Firstly, schools are doing such a bad job that many pupils when they leave school are not at the right level either to be accepted by a university or to cope with it when they get there.
  • Secondly, universities rely heavily on the unreasonable method of looking primarily at a candidate?s exam results to judge whether they should be accepted.
  • Thirdly, the more prestigious the university the more rigorous and selective it is in choosing who they admit (this is elitism, a crime in progressive ideology, although the word doesn?t appear in the report ? instead the code word ?excellence? is used).
  • Fourthly, this has to be stopped because equality and fairness are more important than anything else; universities must therefore be compelled to take on more state school applicants from less well-off backgrounds even if they haven?t made the grade.

The report repeatedly acknowledges the shortcomings of secondary schooling in educating pupils to the right standards yet fails to reach the obvious conclusion: it?s the secondary schools that need to improve. When the universities point this out they?re slapped down rather haughtily: ?Universities cannot simply blame schools for inequities in access.? As anyone in higher education can tell you, for well over a decade many institutions have had to incorporate a certain amount of remedial teaching into their first year programmes to bring students up to the required level. Clearly they ought to be teaching their students A-levels again. Or maybe they should just stop being so picky.

HAVING SPENT YEARS modifying exams so that increasing numbers of pupils end up with good grades Milburn and his mates now turn round and criticise universities for placing too much emphasis on them: ?Over-reliance on A-level results,? they say, ?engineers a distorted social intake?. Note the sneakiness of ?over-reliance?. Notice also the assumption that social mobility is a primary purpose of higher education, as opposed to, well, education and research. Exams thus become another obstacle in the drive for equality and fairness.

There?s another worrying element to this demotion of the value of exams and achievement in general. Consider the weasel in this little thicket: ?Often, particularly in public debate, an emphasis on excellence is confused with a sole focus on prior attainment?. How patronising. Achievement, in other words, means nothing; potential is all. Seems like all those exams are a waste of time. You can see why this appeals to politicians. If you judged most of them on their ?attainments? they?d be hard put to find work as toilet cleaners. Judge them on their unrealised potential, however, and their worth is inestimable. To assume that the reality of demonstrated ability is worth less than some nebulous potential is surely one of the most asinine judgements one can make. No surprise that it turns up in a government document about education.

The report is replete with such asininities. There?s a mention of the coming abolition of the traditional Honours system and classes of degree, for instance, and a casual mention of the Education Maintenance Allowance, abolished by the current government ? no mention being made that it was destined to be closed down by Labour in 2013. There?s the obligatory reference to a fake charity for back up, in this case Teach First. I use the term fake charity in its now accepted term to mean a charity that receives a large amount of its income from the government to lobby the government on its behalf or to act as its agent. A glance at the accounts of Teach First (2011) shows it has received substantial cash from the state.

There?s even a swipe at employers, for targeting recruitment from ?too narrow a range of universities?, ie, the better ones. It doesn?t seem to occur to Milburn and his moronic mates that a) it?s up to businesses to make their own decisions and b) if they want the best graduates they?ll obviously go to the best universities first. In the truly Orwellian looking-glass world of the progressive mind such common sense actions are reprehensible.

LET?S BE QUITE clear what this is all about. The whole aim of this report is to attack the most prestigious educational institutions (ie Oxford, Cambridge and the Russell Group) for their elitism (ie for choosing the best qualified students). Universities will be compelled to take on students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have been failed by the secondary education system and are therefore unprepared in every way for higher education. The report repeats the mantra that universities ?as autonomous institutions, should be able to determine their own admissions criteria? while laying out plans to deprive them of that ability.

This is statist mission creep: universities are to replace their primary purposes of research and education with the ideological aim of social engineering, in this case ?social mobility?. Such moves, we are told by the experts, will result in more fairness and equality and thus, magically, a more prosperous society.

This is the steamroller heading for our universities, coming to flatten out education. Anything beholden to the state will be levelled. The sooner we get more private universities the better.

Hyde's OT TD keeps Ohio State perfect, 29-22

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Many in a crowd of 105,290 thought No. 7 Ohio State had no chance of winning after star quarterback Braxton Miller went out with an injury late in the third quarter.

Backup Kenny Guiton had other ideas.

Guiton came off the bench in relief to lead touchdown drives in the final minute of regulation and in overtime, with Carlos Hyde scoring on a 1-yard run to clinch No. 7 Ohio State's 29-22 victory over Purdue on Saturday.

Purdue (3-4, 0-3 Big Ten) led 22-14 when Ohio State got the ball with just 47 seconds left in regulation. Guiton, inserted when Miller went out with an undisclosed injury, hit Chris Fields on a 2-yard touchdown pass with 3 seconds remaining. Guiton then found freshman Jeff Heuerman on the conversion pass to tie it at 22.

Hyde scored on a short plunge for Ohio State (8-0, 4-0) before Purdue's Caleb TerBush, who had two TD passes, misfired on four passes in the overtime.

Purdue had earlier scored on TerBush TD passes of 83 yards to Akeem Shavers ? on the first offensive play of the game ? and 31 yards to Gary Bush in the third quarter, along with Akeem Hunt's 100-yard kickoff return. The Boilermakers also picked up a safety when Ohio State was called for an illegal block in the end zone in the fourth quarter.

Miller completed 9 of 20 passes for 113 yards with an interception and ran for 47 yards on 12 carries before leaving the game on the next-to-last play of the third quarter.

After Ohio State got the ball on Bradley Roby's blocked field goal, Miller took the ball on first down from the 24, stiff-armed a defender and sped around right end before being caught by cornerback Josh Johnson, who threw him hard to the turf on his left shoulder.

Miller didn't get up for several minutes ? he was in obvious pain ? while he was attended by several doctors and trainers. Eventually he sat up, then stood on shaky legs for at least 60 seconds before he was led to the sidelines. He was later taken to the locker room by cart.

Guiton, in coach Urban Meyer's doghouse this spring, came in to replace him.

The teams had traded touchdowns in the third quarter, with Ohio State taking a 14-13 lead on Hyde's 2-yard run, set up by a 35-yard Miller-to-Chris Fields pass on which the Boilermakers blew the coverage.

Purdue answered by retaking the lead on TerBush's quick pass to the right flank where Bush picked up a key block from Crosby Wright while racing untouched 31 yards for the score and a 20-14 lead.

The Buckeyes drove to a fourth down at the Purdue 33, where Drew Basil's 50-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright flush and bounced away on the third play of the fourth quarter.

Ohio State took over at its own 39 with 47 seconds left in regulation. On first down, Guiton ? who almost quit the team earlier this year ? threw a long pass to a wide-open Devin Smith for a 39-yard gain on first down.

Battling the clock, the Buckeyes eventually faced a first and goal at the Purdue 2 with 3 seconds left. Guiton rolled to his left and fired a low pass to Fields. The play was reviewed but was allowed to stand.

Now down by two points, the Buckeyes set up for the conversion. Guiton lofted a soft toss over the linebackers to Heuerman to tie it.

After smothering the Boilermakers on the ensuing kickoff, the overtime was decided early.

Guiton led the Buckeyes steadily and Hyde gave them their biggest lead of the game on a 1-yard burst.

TerBush, who finished 19 of 30 passing for 230 yards with one interception, had a pass dropped to start the overtime and then threw three incompletions. Fans flooded on the field in celebration after his fourth-down pass hit the ground.

Guiton hit on 6 of 11 passes for 77 yards and the one touchdown with one interception. Hyde ended up with 91 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns.

Purdue led 13-7 at the half on the strength of two huge, end-to-end plays.

On the first snap of the game, TerBush floated a pass into the left flat to Shavers who had slipped behind the coverage of linebacker Storm Klein. Shavers had to wait for the pass, caught it, then left Klein grasping at air as he completed the play untouched.

The Buckeyes, who have gotten off to slow starts all season on offense, did so again. They punted after each of their first two possessions before mounting a drive to take the lead.

On fourth and 2 at the Purdue 46, Hyde bounced off a teammate and cut off left tackle for a 21-yard gain and a first down. On third and 10 at the 25, Miller then hit Corey Brown on a crossing pattern for 17 yards. On the next play, Miller used a nifty fake on a handoff to Hyde and skirted right end for the 8-yard touchdown.

The Buckeyes held the lead for exactly 12 seconds.

Hunt took the ensuing kickoff 2 yards deep in the end zone and appeared to slightly hesitate before cutting to the right sideline while picking up blocks. He cut back to the right hash, then outran two defenders thanks to another slick cut to the right sideline to complete the 100-yard return for the 13-7 lead.

The Boilermakers defense had been ravaged in its last two outings, both at home: a 44-13 loss to Michigan and a 38-14 defeat to Wisconsin. It surrendered an incredible 82 points, 771 rushing yards and 1,054 yards.

But the Buckeyes, with one of the most volatile offenses in the nation, were held to 342 yards.

Stand-up: Obama and Romney draw laughs at dinner

NEW YORK (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney scored big laughs at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner, an annual fundraiser at New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel for Catholic charitable work that has drawn presidential candidates since World War II.

A sampling of the best quips from their stand-up routines:

___

"I had a lot more energy in our second debate. I felt really well-rested after the nice long nap I had in first debate." ? Obama, poking fun at his poor performance in the first nationally televised debate against Romney.

___

"As President Obama surveys the Waldorf banquet room, with everyone in white tie and finery, you have to wonder what he's thinking: 'So little time. So much to redistribute.'" ? Romney, riffing on conservative complaints that Obama wants to redistribute the wealth.

___

"In less than three weeks, voters in states like Ohio, Virginia and Florida will decide this incredibly important election. Which begs the question: What are we doing here?" ? Obama, on spending valuable campaigning time in solidly Democratic New York.

___

"Find the biggest available straw man and then mercilessly attack him. Big Bird didn't see it coming. By the way, in the spirit of 'Sesame Street' tonight, the president's remarks tonight are brought to you by the letter 'O' and the number 16 trillion." ? Romney, on how he prepares for debates, his own plan to defund public television and the national debt.

___

"Earlier today I went shopping at some stores in Midtown. I understand Gov. Romney went shopping for some stores in Midtown." ? Obama, on Romney's vast wealth.

___

"President Obama and I are each very lucky to have one person who's always in our corner. Someone who we can lean on and is someone who is a comforting presence without whom we wouldn't be able to go another day. I have my beautiful wife, Ann, and he has Bill Clinton." ? Romney, teasing about the former president's prominent role in Obama's campaign.

___

"After my foreign trip in 2008, I was attacked as a celebrity because I was so popular with our allies overseas. I have to say, I'm impressed by how well Gov. Romney has avoided that problem." ? Obama, on Romney's trip to Europe and the Middle East last summer, which drew critical headlines.

___

"I've already seen early reports from tonight's dinner. Headline: 'Obama embraced by Catholics. Romney dines with rich people.'" ? Romney, on media bias against his candidacy.

Black Thought Discusses GrassROOTS Initiative for Girls | Black and ...

During a recent interview with Black Enterprise, The Roots? Tariq ?Black Thought? Trotter discussed his?GrassROOTS Community Foundation (GCF), an organization creating solutions to health challenges faced by women and girls.

The idea for GCF was sparked by Trotter?s friend, Dr. Janice Johnson Dias, who is co-founder of the organization and a current Sociology professor at John Jay College. Her work in women?s health inspired Trotter to join in the effort and give back to the community. Without community based programs such as this, ?I would not be here today,? Trotter stated.

?I was moved by her vision especially since the communities that she was talking about were communities that I had lived in, communities where I still had family. But I must say what really made me say yes was the fact that she kept talking about girls; and I have a daughter now; and the week before, my wife Michelle and I were just talking about how important it was for us to give back.?

On October 6, a charity concert for the organization took place in Newark, New Jersey where three of their programs include H.E.A.L. (Health, Education, and Literacy), S.H.A.P.E. (Strong, Healthy, and Powerful Everyday) and Super Camp. Trotter says that they are targeting the ten cities in the U.S. where women and girls experience the highest incidences of obesity, breast cancer, suicide and HIV/AIDS.

When asked how he felt about the current healthcare system, Trotter said that he feels more health programs are needed and that GCF is developing affordable means for people go gain access to health services. While the foundation focused mainly on girls and families last year, they plan to expand to include the community as a whole and will begin a full year of health programming at the Early Middle College at Bennett College this fall as Greensboro, NC is one of the ten cities they are targeting.

?I urge folks to join us in this effort to create a world where all girls can grow up to be healthy women,? Trotter said. ?Given how much we depend on women to hold our communities together it is the very least we can do.?

Find out more about the foundation on their website and read the complete interview on Black Enterprise.

BMWK? Are there any organizations like this in your area? Why do you feel it?s so important to focus on women?s health??

Damage to blood vessel lining may account for kidney failure patients' heart risks

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? Individuals with kidney failure often develop heart problems, but it's not clear why. A study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN) provides evidence that their kidneys' inability to excrete waste products in the urine, which leads to build-up of these products in the blood, may damage the sugary lining of blood vessels and lead to heart troubles.

Carmen Vlahu (an MD/PhD student at the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam, in the Netherlands) and her colleagues wondered whether the "glycocalyx," a sugar layer coating the insides of blood vessels, is damaged in patients with kidney failure and is responsible for their increased risks of heart problems. To investigate, they used a newly developed imaging method to look at 40 patients' and 21 healthy individuals' blood vessels. They also measured participants' blood levels of glycocalyx constituents.

Compared with healthy individuals, kidney failure patients had lost some of the glycocalyx coating the insides of their blood vessels, and they had high levels of glycocalyx constituents in their blood, consistent with increased shedding of glycocalyx from blood vessel walls.

"Impaired glycocalyx barrier properties, together with shedding of its constituents into the blood, probably contribute to the aggressive vascular pathology present in this group of patients," said Vlahu. "The state of endothelial glycocalyx and its circulating components could provide valuable tools to monitor vascular vulnerability, to detect early stages of disease, to evaluate risk, and to judge the response of patients with kidney disease to treatment," she added.
