WASHINGTON (AP) ? Immigration activists are calling on President Barack Obama to end deportations of immigrants who might be eligible for legal status under a new immigration bill.
Activists have long complained of record deportations breaking up families under the Obama administration. Officials representing labor unions, day laborers and others held a conference call and released a letter Monday telling Obama it makes no sense to be deporting people that he's committed to legalizing through the immigration bill he supports.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reports deporting close to 400,000 people annually in recent years.
When asked to address complaints about deportations, Obama has said that until the law changes he has to enforce the law on the books.
